The piston guide, part 3115 1680 00, keeps the percussion piston centered in its bore on the return stroke of an Atlas Copco rock drill, taking the side loading that the piston itself is not designed to carry. It is deliberately the softer of the two mating surfaces, so it wears in place of the piston or the cylinder bore, both of which are far more expensive to replace.
A worn piston guide lets the piston contact the bore wall directly on part of its stroke, and once that starts happening the bore itself begins to score, which turns a simple guide replacement into a full cylinder rebuild if it runs too long. Stalroc quotes this Atlas Copco reference by part number and exports worldwide to mining, quarrying, and drilling contractors.
