The guide sleeve, part 3115 2742 00, keeps a moving shaft or piston centred along its stroke, taking the side load that would otherwise transfer directly onto the seals riding next to it. As the sleeve's bore wears oversize, it allows the shaft to move off-centre by a small margin that is enough to shorten seal life without yet affecting the sleeve's own basic function.
