The gland, part 150 781 48, retains and compresses the rod seal at the open end of a Sandvik cylinder, and it is what actually holds sealing pressure against the rod rather than the seal alone. A gland that has worn oversize at its bore lets the rod ride slightly off-center on its stroke, and that small misalignment is what wears the rod seal out well ahead of its normal life.
Because the gland also acts as the rod's guide bearing in most cylinder designs, wear here tends to show up first as a rod that wobbles slightly at full extension rather than as a leak, with the leak following once the seal itself has been damaged by the misalignment.
