The diaphragm, part 550 323 39, is far more likely to be damaged during fitting than in service, because a thin membrane creases, nicks or stretches the moment it is handled carelessly. A crease that is invisible after assembly becomes the first place the membrane cracks, and a nick on the sealing rim becomes a slow leak that is hard to trace to its source.
Fit it with its sealing faces clean, dry and free of old gasket residue, take it out of its packing only at the last moment, and never use a tool with a sharp edge to position it. Tighten the clamping bolts evenly in a crossing sequence rather than one after the other, because uneven clamping pulls the membrane to one side and leaves one part of the rim underloaded. A diaphragm that has been compressed once takes a set, so it should be replaced rather than refitted when the assembly is opened.
