The bushing, part 550 356 04, provides a replaceable wear surface between a shaft and its housing, taking the running clearance so the more expensive shaft or housing does not have to. Because it is the softer of the two mating surfaces by design, it wears first and predictably, which is the point: replacing a worn bushing on schedule is far cheaper than machining an oversize housing or shaft later.
