The coupling sleeve, part 552 014 12, joins two shaft ends or rod sections so torque and thrust transmit through it as if the assembly were a single piece, while still allowing the joint to be broken down for service. Because the sleeve carries the full load path at the joint, any wear in its bore shows up as play between the two connected sections before it shows up anywhere else in the drive train.
A coupling sleeve run with excess internal clearance lets the joined sections shift slightly under load, which concentrates wear at the sleeve ends rather than spreading evenly along its length.
