The chuck, part BG003 004 81, grips the shank adapter and carries both the rotational torque and the percussive impact into the drill string, combining two very different loading modes at the same contact surfaces. Because it transmits shock as well as torque, wear inside the chuck first shows up as reduced grip under impact rather than as slip under steady rotation, which a check made only under rotation can miss.
