The side bolt, part 3115 2113 00, clamps two housings together from the side of a drifter rather than through the main body, carrying shear load across the joint face in addition to the clamping tension the bolt itself provides. Because the load is shear as well as tension, a side bolt that has stretched slightly lets the housings creep against each other under vibration even while the bolt still measures within its length tolerance.
Side bolts are normally renewed as a full set rather than one at a time, since a single stretched bolt in an otherwise fresh set concentrates load onto itself and stretches faster than it would have as part of a uniformly worn set.
